5/26/09 Prop 8 protest

LOOK it's the mayor of West Hollywood. Well... um... yeah no, my eyesight is horrible and for the longest time, I thought a kid sitting on his daddy's shoulders was the mayor. The mayor of Los Angeles, a few of the plaintiffs & lawyers straight from Sacramento, a whole bunch of city council members, George Takei, Drew Barrymore, & Kathy Griffin made speeches on stage, too. Of course I didn't SEE any of them, for reasons stated above~ I wanted to get more shots of some of the signs.

The march was down Santa Monica Blvd, starting at the edge of WeHo and going to Hollywood & Highland. Everyone went four miles in an hour and a half, not too bad. Met a lot of rad people.

My friends & I didn't know where it would end up, so we parked in Beverly Hills and then stressed out about getting back to the car. The walk back itself wouldn't have been so bad, but it was 10pm when the three-minute sit-in in the intersection ended, and we wanted to be back home before midnight. (No, really, three minutes. Possibly two and a half. And the streets were already blocked off. I... don't get it.) So I went on my first subway adventure, and then, um, promptly headed back, because apparently, we can't read. Whatever. It was a nice walk back. Plenty of other folks doing the same thing.

The important thing was that it left everyone feeling a lot more hopeful. Strength in numbers. It reminded me that 2010 is too far off for me to already be a Debbie Downer about, and while it's going to take a lot of work to get this back on the ballot, we can do it. It was slightly depressing that this event was planned no matter what the outcome of the court's decision, and as uplifting as it was, spirits could have been a million times higher.

Also I learned that I need to exercise more, because I walked about ten miles last night and today I feel like I could beat up Michael Phelps and a bear at the same time.

"Have fun and be safe, ladies!" smiled the LAPD.

"Endorphins make you happy, and happy people just don't kill other people."

Sorry, just had to do it...
That's awesome that you went to the protest. It will be overturned. Even if I have to become a resident of Cali, dammit.

Walking down Santa Monica Blvd/ Hollywood Blvd at that time of the night is ....very brave. Or very foolish, if you're alone. I guess the sheer number of people out at night made all the difference..! Was there in '07 and can't say I felt safe, even in the daytime.

Santa Monica Blvd gets sketchy when you head into Hollywood, yeah, but it's fine and dandy on the Westside. Hollywood Blvd is definitely best explored from a car, though. XD

Where we got off at our ill-fated subway stop was creepier. Couple of guys on the street corner started yelling and shoving each other. I'm... really glad we decided to head back.

OH MAN

that is one dodgy stop. I remember being on the subway and there were SNIFFER DOGS all over that station.

kljdflgjfdgk omg, I am not surprised. It was one of those "Hey, I've never been on my city's subway system, this will be a tale of experience!" things.

At Hollywood & Highland, right before going to V & B, some dude was running around the escalator, screaming about his dead father and how envious he was of ladies because of our vaginas. Then ~*~seven~*~ police officers ran down the steps, and handcuffed him.

It was nuts.

O_o

.... someone should remind him that vaginas carry liabilities all of their own. Like periods. And childbirth. But yes, that is several different varieties of NUTS.

It's cool that you made it to the protest. I'm not going to lie, I'm just as impressed by all that walking as I am about the protest itself because man, MAN. I am out of shape and thinking about it makes me tired. Anyhow, I know that this whole Prop 8 business is just getting started, and I have to believe it will end well. Just have to.

Honestly, there were a couple of "OH GAWD, THIS IS HOW I'M GOING TO DIE, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET" moments. I was so glad I brought a bottle of water with me.

It was nice to hear the speakers make comparisons to different civil rights movements. Might not get done for a long-ass while, but the hands of time only move forward.

Good for you! Have been down those streets many times and for visibility of the movement, cannot think of a better parade ground.

It's the same route for LA Pride, too, so I'm excited :D
